The business application resides on the main server and is accessed from a user’s desktop through Microsoft® Internet Explorer, via a web server. As business application processing occurs on the main server and not the presentation tier, there is minimal impact to the front-end presentation when application enhancements are required. Communication between the presentation layer and the business application layer is achieved through industry standard TCP/IP.

For the database layer, Quasar™ 6 uses Caché® technology.

Caché® - InterSystems’ post-relational database – provides substantial scalability and lightning-fast performance. It is designed to acknowledge the pressures placed upon today’s transaction processing that overreach the capabilities of relational technology. Applications and their underlying database now need to span large networks, service thousands of clients and still provide excellent performance. But increasingly, organisations are facing performance limits imposed by their relational database technology. Caché® however, is a high performance database that addresses these relational database performance issues.

We have for some years been developing within a Caché® environment and made extensive use of the product’s object technology. In doing so, a broad range of objects have been created for the Quasar™ 6 product covering areas such as dealing, cash management, static data, enquiries, valuations and Unit Pricing. This object environment has allowed us to model complex data sets simply and present the functional richness of the product dynamically.

The business and application logic, in conjunction with the Caché® database, can be hosted by the following platforms:

• OpenVMS Alpha
• UNIX Servers e.g. Sun Solaris®, HP-UX®, IBM AIX®
• Microsoft® Windows Server Products e.g. Win2000

In Quasar™ 6, comprehensive access to your data is provided by Quasar™ Open Access. . The module offers off-the-shelf ‘complex’ enquiries (Quasar™ 6 Portfolio Enquiries) as well as providing user definable query capabilities (Quasar™ Query) and access to SQL. In terms of transporting data, either into or out of Quasar™ 6, Quasar™ Open Access also offers an extensive library of connectors (Quasar™ Connectors).
